The UN Assembly General voted by a majority to exclude Russia from the Human Rights Council

The membership of the Russian Federation in the UN Human Rights Council has been suspended by a decision of the  Assembl General.

During the vote in the UN  Assembly General, 93 countries voted “for the exclusion of Russia”, when only 24 states voted “against”. Another 58 UN member states abstained.

In the draft resolution is expressed “serious concern over the protracted human rights crisis and the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine”, in particular over reports of human rights violations by the Russian Federation.

Without Russia, the UN Council on Human Right remains 46 members.

Before the vote on the rostrum of the UN Assembly General, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Organization Serhiy Kyslytsia spoke.

– In a few minutes you will have a chance to prove that you are not indifferent observers. All you have to do is press the “yes” button. By doing so, you will save the Human Rights Council, you will save many people around the world and in Ukraine. If you press “against”, then it will be similar to what you pulled the trigger. This will indicate a red dot on the screen. Red is the color of blood that dies, that is not guilty of anything. And here are these red dots on this screen, their images will be with you and all of us, until we are let down by memory itself, – said the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN.

Earlier, Russia tried to intimidate countries that voting “for” or abstaining would be seen as an “unfriendly gesture” with implications for bilateral ties.

Earlier, a majority of MEPs voted in favor of a resolution calling for Russia’s exclusion from international organizations such as Interpol, the World Trade Organization, UNESCO and the G20.
