Escalation of the conflict through hunger: Russia is targeting Ukraine’s agriculture

Russian invaders in Ukraine are targeting agriculture during the war, as stated Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture of Germany Cem Özdemir.
– We are receiving alarming news from Ukraine, where Russian troops are apparently deliberately destroying agricultural infrastructure and supply chains, – he said.
Özdemir affirms that in the long run, this could affect the productivity of Ukrainian agriculture and, as a result, supplies to world markets.
He stressed that Russia’s war against Ukraine was more and more manifesting itself as an attack on the world community.
– Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategy is to escalate conflicts by increasing hunger, – he explained.
The Minister called for expanding arms supplies to Ukraine to avoid a catastrophe of global hunger.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that Russia wanted to create a major food crisis in the world. That is why the Russian invaders are destroying part of the granaries in Ukraine, closing the export of grain from Ukrainian ports.
The Director General of the World Trade Organisation Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala noted that the sharp rise in world food prices due to the war in Ukraine could provoke hunger riots in poor countries.
