Germany supports the embargo on Russian oil – DPA

The German federal government supports plans for an oil embargo on Russia.

This was reported by the German news agency DPA, citing sources among diplomats in the European Union.

In recent preliminary talks on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia, official Berlin has clearly called for an embargo.

But there are a number of countries that are holding back the oil embargo against Russia, namely Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, as well as Spain, Italy and Greece.

According to European diplomats, countries such as Slovakia and Hungary have so far opposed a quick ban on imports, as they are highly dependent on Russian oil supplies. Meanwhile, southern Europeans are anxiously awaiting rising energy prices following the embargo.

According to DPA, the reason for the change in Germany’s course could be recent successes in finding alternative suppliers of “black gold”. Economy Minister Robert Habeck said Germany’s dependence on Russian oil had fallen from 35% to 12% at the time of the start of the war in Ukraine .

To recall, the European Commission headed by Ursula von der Leyen wants to present a draft of a new package of sanctions against Russia as soon as possible to further increase pressure on the Kremlin.

Earlier it was reported that Germany would do everything possible to get rid of dependence on Russian gas.
