The Armed Forces of Ukraine did not commit war crimes: a member of the Amnesty team on the preparation of the scandalous report

Amnesty International team member Tom Match spoke about the details of the preparation of the scandalous report. He was in Eastern Ukraine together with the author of the report, Donatella Rovera, and then wrote about his impressions.
According to him, instead of expressing shock at Russia’s aggressive bombing of Ukrainian cities, the author focused attention on the fact that one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine hid in the basement of the college.
When he asked Rovera how Ukrainian soldiers were supposed to defend the city, she replied that it didn’t matter, going on to insist that this military presence was a “violation of international humanitarian law.”
– In front-line Bakhmut, we were in an abandoned school, which was turned into a temporary barracks for Ukrainian servicemen. This is not a war crime, he stressed.
In fact, the Ukrainian authorities and our defenders often emphasized that civilians should leave the war zone, offering help to the civilian population, Match said. In his opinion, the Russians will now use the scandalous report to justify aggressive actions against Ukrainians.
– Amnesty International’s attempt to be objective has led to a pernicious and false conclusion that equates the invader with the captured, and the aggressor with the victim, – said Tom Match.
