Russia has blocked the adoption of the final document of the month-long review of the UN Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, complaining that parts of the draft seem “overtly political in nature”. The project criticizes Russia’s occupation of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. The move raised worldwide concerns about a possible nuclear disaster.

The UN review conference could not end with signing a joint final document. Only Moscow opposed the point that Ukraine should exercise control over the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

The Russians were the only ones who did not support the draft treaty. At the same time, the Kremlin blamed Ukraine and our defenders for the disruption of the signing of the agreement, calling the negotiations a “one-sided game.”

There are four references to Zaporizhzhya NPP in the draft of the final protocol. In particular, the countries would show “serious concern about military actions” at nuclear facilities or near them and emphasize the “primary importance of ensuring their control by the competent authorities of Ukraine.”

The publication of the document requires the approval of 191 countries – all participants in the treaty aimed at curbing the spread of nuclear weapons and achieving peace without them.

As a result of the shelling of the Russian army on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the infrastructure of the ZNPP was damaged. According to the state energy company Energoatom, there is a risk of spraying radioactive substances and fires.
