Lukashenko must appear before the tribunal: European Parliament adopts resolution

On Thursday, November 24, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on human rights in Belarus, in which it called on the dictator Alexander Lukashenko to appear before an international tribunal and the International Criminal Court.
This is stated in the press release of the European Parliament.
MEPs “strongly condemned” the unjustified and politically motivated sentences imposed on more than 1.4 thousand political prisoners in Belarus, including members of the so-called “Autukhovich’s twelve”. In addition, the European Parliament condemned the continued imprisonment of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski and calls on the regime of Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko to ensure his release before the award ceremony in Oslo on 10 December.
– Supporting the position of the Belarusian democratic opposition that Belarus should be recognized as an occupied territory, from which Russian troops should be immediately withdrawn, the parliament strongly condemns the participation of the Lukashenko government in Russia’s war against Ukraine,” the statement said.
The resolution notes that the Belarusian regime shares responsibility with Russia for war crimes in Ukraine, for which it must be brought to justice before an international tribunal and the International Criminal Court.
In addition, MEPs reiterated their call on the EU countries and the European Commission to strictly impose on Belarus the same sanctions as those imposed on Russia. The European Parliament resolution also calls on the EU institutions to support Belarusian independent news agencies, such as Nexta, and calls for more systematic cooperation between the EU and representatives of Belarusian democratic forces.
