Zelenskyy: If Russia captures Bakhmut, it will open the way for the enemy to attack other cities
If Russian troops are able to capture Bakhmut in Donetsk region, it will open the way for Russia to seize key cities in eastern Ukraine.
This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with CNN. According to him, the Ukrainian military leadership decided to continue the defense of Bakhmut.
– “We understand that after Bakhmut they can go further. They can go to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. After Bakhmut, the Russians will have an open road to other cities of Ukraine in the Donetsk sector. That is why our guys are standing there,” the president said.
According to Zelenskyy, Russia wants to win at least some kind of victory in Bakhmut and raise a flag over the city at the cost of the lives of residents and the destruction of all buildings. However, Ukraine is primarily thinking about its citizens and defenders.
– We must think about our people first and foremost. No one should be surrounded – this is very important. The military themselves see that we must remain strong there, despite the fact that Russia has destroyed the entire city. The military helped children and civilians to leave the city – people were still leaving Bakhmut. We helped everyone,” the President of Ukraine emphasized.
