Russia is China’s asset: why Xi Jinping is going to Moscow and what issues he will discuss with Putin

Путін, Сі Цзіньпін

Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia is important for consolidating Moscow’s vassalage to Beijing.

This was stated by political analyst Oleh Sahakyan on the air of the United News telethon. He noted that Xi Jinping is now shifting to a more proactive foreign policy as he seeks to restore China’s leadership status.

– The Russian aggression has somewhat “washed away” this status, because Putin looks more determined. Xi Jinping cannot resolve the Taiwan issue, and Putin is actively asserting himself against this background. This is partly why the drone was shot down over the Black Sea. Putin wanted to demonstrate again to the camp of non-democratic countries that he could still do something, – Sahakyan said.

According to the political analyst, Xi Jinping wants to show Putin that “Russia can do nothing without China.”

– Xi Jinping wants to demonstrate that the Russian-Ukrainian war is linked to Taiwan. To put the West on a conditional stretch: if you help Taiwan, we help Russia. Accordingly, it is necessary to create a space of opportunity to help Russia, minimizing the risks for ourselves, – said Oleg Sahakyan.

In addition, Xi Jinping must agree with Putin on what to do with the “peace plan” China has offered Ukraine.

– The second is to agree on where and how China will help Russia circumvent sanctions. Most likely, they will enter a certain alternative “gray” economy of non-democratic countries and help each other within it. And thirdly, they will discuss China’s assistance to Russia in terms of the external arena and interests. After that, China wants to be able to “trade” with Russia. Russia is an asset for China, – the political scientist noted.

Oleg Sahakyan is sure that China will test the point at which Russia is ready to go for a compromise scenario and withdraw its troops from Ukraine.

– This visit will certainly not result in any breakthrough. China will not openly give Russia weapons, and covertly, it will extremely limit the assistance it has in the military sphere to avoid being caught red-handed. But China is considering certain limited options for assistance because Russia would like to receive this help, – the political scientist added.

It should be remembered that Chinese leader Xi Jinping will visit Russia tomorrow. His trip to the arresting country is scheduled for March 20-22.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the purpose of the visit is to “call for peace” and “promote negotiations.” This will be Xi Jinping’s first trip to Russia since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
