Ukraine is not a problem, but an advantage for NATO. The state expects to receive a commitment from the allies at the Vilnius summit that will determine the path to NATO membership. The time for such a step is long overdue.
This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko, commenting on a publication from the German Press Agency (DPA), which states that the United States and Germany allegedly do not want concrete decisions on Ukraine’s membership in NATO yet. According to him, the pseudo-arguments in the article are a set of erroneous judgments that have long since lost their relevance.
– There are important battles ahead, but Ukraine has already made impressive progress in defending itself against Russian aggression. In February 2022, skeptics gave Ukraine 72 hours and optimists gave it a week. Ukraine has not only withstood the attack, but is also conducting successful operations to liberate the occupied territories,” Nikolenko said.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman noted that Ukraine had previously heard pseudo-arguments about the need to refrain from steps that could allegedly provoke Russia to new aggression. However, he noted that Ukraine’s non-alignment did not help deter Russia from attacking.
At the same time, the diplomatic efforts of Ukraine, France, and Germany within the framework of the Minsk process also failed to prevent a full-scale Russian invasion, because Moscow’s goal is the complete destruction of the state. Instead, progress on Ukraine’s path to NATO membership will force Russia to curb its aggression, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
– The current international support for Ukraine in countering the Russian occupiers does not contradict, but rather complements NATO membership. The future of Euro-Atlantic security is being decided on the battlefield in Ukraine, and our country’s accession to NATO will guarantee the strategic security of the entire Alliance,” Nikolenko said.
