Russian military drones are not attacking Romania, but they are creating a “real problem.” The fall of their wreckage on the country’s territory is unacceptable.
This was stated by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Agerpres reports.
He reminded that the remains of drones had been found three times in the country. There were no injuries as a result of the fall of their remains, but, the Romanian leader noted, “this does not mean that these incidents do not matter.”
Klaus Iohannis also emphasized that Russian troops are attacking ports on the Ukrainian coast to prevent the transit of grain. He said that these attacks constitute war crimes, as they are directed against civilian targets, infrastructure and people working in the ports.
The Romanian president also noted that after the drone incidents, they discussed the situation with allied countries and strengthened air defense in the area to protect citizens.
– Although Russia’s attacks are not aimed at Romania, the situation is unacceptable. The drones are not attacking our country, but the fact that pieces of them are falling on the country’s territory is a real problem that needs to be addressed,” he said.
The Head of State added that people living on the Romanian bank of the Danube near the territories affected by the attacks are afraid, but understand the importance of supporting Ukraine, as they realize that they “may be next.”
Falling debris from Russian drones in Romania
Since Russia’s withdrawal from the grain deal in July, the aggressor’s forces have been constantly destroying the port and grain infrastructure of Ukrainian ports on the Danube with attacks by Shahed-136/131 drones.
Over the past few weeks, the military has discovered the wreckage of Russian drones on the banks of the Danube in Romania three times. The first time the remains of the Shahed were found on September 6, the second time on September 9, and the third time on September 13. The dates of the findings coincide with Russian shelling of Ukrainian ports.
On September 15, Romania closed the skies in a 30-kilometer zone near the border with Ukraine. The country’s military said it was ready to use its air defense system against Russian drones.
The Romanian government also began building shelters for residents of Plauru village, located opposite the city of Izmail, where the largest number of enemy Shahed-136/131 wrecks were found.
