Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will officially become the next Secretary General of NATO.

This was reported by the press service of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Rutte is the new Secretary General of NATO

Mark Rutte’s appointment as NATO Secretary General was supported by all 32 member states of the bloc.

His candidacy was approved by the ambassadors of NATO member states during a meeting at the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels.

The Associated Press noted that US President Joe Biden and allies will officially congratulate Rutte on the appointment during the NATO summit in Washington on July 9-11.

Rutte will take up his duties on October 1, when the mandate of Jens Stoltenberg, the current head of NATO, ends. Stoltenberg spent more than ten years in this position. His mandate was repeatedly extended.

Stoltenberg has already congratulated Rutte on his election as Secretary General.

— Mark is a true supporter of the transatlantic alliance, a strong leader and consensus builder. I wish him every success in the further strengthening of NATO. I know that I am leaving NATO in good hands,” Stoltenberg wrote.

It will be recalled that a few days ago the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, informed the NATO allies about the withdrawal of his candidacy for the position of Secretary General of the bloc.

Earlier, Rutte was supported by Hungary and Slovakia, which opposed it. The media noted that the change of position of Budapest and Bratislava was an important step for Rutte on the way to receiving this position.
