Britain has ordered additional Martlet missiles, some of which have been delivered to the Armed Forces
– Hundreds of LMMs have been donated to Ukraine as they were used to repel the illegal Russian invasion that began in February 2022, the British Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The order, worth 176 million pounds, is intended to equip existing and future short-range air defense systems of the British Army, such as Stormer combat vehicles.
They will also be used in the Royal Navy’s Martlet maritime anti-ship missile system, which is deployed from Wildcat helicopters.
Characteristics of Martlet missiles
It is noted that the Light Multi-Mission Missiles (LMM) weigh only 13 kg each and provide highly accurate protection against threats such as drones, helicopters, aircraft and small, fast maritime targets.
The Martlet lightweight multi-role guided missile was developed for the UK military by Thales Air Defense.
The LMM is designed to provide a single family of weapons that can be used in different modes.
The length of the missile is 1.3 meters. The diameter is 76 mm. It uses multi-mode guidance (laser, semi-active laser, infrared). The missile has a speed of Mach 1.5. The range is 8 km.
