The Council of the EU extended the sanctions against the Russian Federation for the occupation of part of the territory of Ukraine for one year

The Council of the European Union extended the sanctions against Russia introduced for the occupation of Ukrainian territory. They will be valid until February 24, 2025.
This is reported in the Official Journal of the EU.
It is noted that based on the results of the review of the sanctions introduced against Russia on February 23, 2022, they should be extended for another 12 months.
It is indicated that on October 6, 2022, in response to Russia’s illegal annexation of the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine, the Council adopted an additional decision that expanded the geography of the restrictions to all territories not under the control of the government of Ukraine.
On December 14 and 15, 2023, the European Council adopted conclusions in which it confirmed its condemnation of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, which is a clear violation of the UN Charter, and recalled the EU’s unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
— On the basis of the review of the Decision, as long as the illegal actions of the Russian Federation continue to violate the prohibition on the use of force, which is a serious violation of international law, it is advisable to keep in force all the measures currently implemented by the EU, and to take additional measures, if necessary, – the message says.
Thus, the restrictive measures should be extended for another 12 months, until February 24, 2025.
The day before, on February 19, the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Baerbock, announced that the European Union is preparing new sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with the death of politician Alexei Navalny in a Russian colony.
