Approximately one third of the Russian armoured combat vehicles (ACVs) that took part in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine are no longer in storage.

This is evidenced by satellite imagery cited by an open-source analyst (OSINT) with the nickname Jompy.

What equipment has Russia lost

Watching now

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine calculates the estimated losses of Russian military equipment and personnel on a daily basis, and these figures have increased recently after several months of high losses amid Russia’s offensive in eastern Ukraine and attempts to take the town of Chasiv Yar.

The war is taking a toll on Moscow’s armour stockpile, according to an estimate compiled by Jompy user based on satellite imagery of warehouses and repair plants in Russia.

The report, published on Monday, says that Russia has 10,389 armoured vehicles in storage, down 4,763 from pre-war stocks in 2021, with an overall reduction of almost 32 per cent.

Among them, Russia has lost the most MT-LB (multipurpose transporter-tractor light armoured) of the Soviet era. Russia has only 922 of them left, compared to a pre-war stock of 2,527.

According to the OSINT analyst, Moscow also faced heavy losses of armoured personnel carriers (APCs), of which only 244, or 38.3 per cent of the pre-war stock of 637 units, remained.

There were also heavy losses in BTR-50 armoured personnel carriers, of which only 41.6 per cent, or 52 units, remained compared to pre-war stocks.

In addition, Russia no longer has 708 APCS-60s in storage, which is 78.63 per cent, or 2,605 units out of 3,313 units before the invasion, Jompy reports.

Assessment of Russian losses

Although Jompy notes that there is no complete certainty in the figures, he added: “Having spent so much time observing Russian depots and repair plants and noticing trends, I think I have a right to be confident in my numbers.”

– Although MT-LBs are running out of stocks, this does not mean they will soon disappear from the battlefield, as there are probably 1,000-2,000 of them in Russia, the report said.

As of Wednesday, the total losses of Russian infantry fighting vehicles estimated by Oryx, which uses video and photographs as evidence, were 1,314, of which 919 were destroyed, 34 damaged, 94 abandoned and 267 captured.

Oryx claims that the level of available evidence it relies on means that the number of destroyed vehicles is “significantly higher”.
