Ukraine is dealing with Russian terrorists, so the path to peace will be long, because we all have to rely on international law.
This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with the Italian TV channel Sky TG24.
According to Zelenskyy, about 100 countries have registered to participate in the Peace Summit, which starts today in Switzerland. All continents will be represented at the conference.
The summit is proposing three items for consideration so far, because this is just the beginning.
– The road to peace is a long one, because we are dealing with terrorists and we have to follow the most correct path based on the UN Charter and international law. It is very important that we have the same basis. And we are doing this without breaking the law, without violating people’s rights,” Zelenskyy said.
Three points for the Peace Summit
The first is food security. When Putin blocked the Black Sea, it led to big problems in Asia and Africa, and even in many European countries.
The second is nuclear security. Zelenskyy reminded us that Russia has seized the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
– This does not even mention the fact that this caused a significant electricity shortage for Ukraine and European countries, which could also receive electricity from it, cheap electricity. And Russian troops seized six units of the ZNPP. And everyone in the world understands that these are six Chernobyls… It is mined, there are armed people there. All partners recognise this,” the President said.
He notes that the ZNPP is controlled only by Russians, and there is no IAEA supervision. That is why this is a security issue not only for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe and the world.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the station must be unblocked. It must be under the control of Ukraine and become safe for the whole world.
The third issue is the return of our prisoners and deportees home. The President noted that Russians had abducted 20,000 children from the occupied territories and taken them to Russia.
– He (Putin – Ed.) talks about peace, but he stole 20,000 children. What does he think he is doing? Does he think that we will forgive him for 20,000 children and thousands of deaths? He thinks that he will be forgiven. No one will forget this. But everything must be done according to the law,” Zelenskyy said.
The President emphasised that Ukrainians are a peaceful nation that just wants to live, to run their economy and their household.
Zelenskyy on Putin’s demand to lift sanctions
Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls Russian dictator Putin’s demand to lift global sanctions against Russia inadequate.
– How can he demand the lifting of sanctions? Again, the man’s inadequacy. Has he forgotten that the whole world imposed sanctions because he (Putin) occupied our territories and killed people? If the world has imposed economic sanctions for starting a war, then you have to leave the territories to have the sanctions lifted,” the President of Ukraine said.
Solidarity of countries at the Peace Summit
Zelenskyy expects that the Peace Summit will have the solidarity of all countries on the above three points. And after the discussion, Ukraine and its partners will move on to a substantive and technical solution to each issue.
And at the upcoming summits, Ukraine will move on to the next important issues, such as Russia’s responsibility for the war, humanitarian demining, etc.
