NATO appointed a new representative of the bloc in Ukraine

On Wednesday, July 17, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the appointment of Patrick Turner as the head of the NATO mission in Ukraine. He will begin his duties in Kyiv in September 2024.

Patrick Turner previously held the positions of NATO Assistant Secretary General for Operations and Assistant Secretary General for Defense Policy and Planning, as well as a number of senior positions in the United Kingdom Civil Service.

According to Jens Stoltenberg, his many years of experience and leadership will help Patrick Turner in his new position.

– As a dedicated civil servant, he has extensive experience in achieving results. I am sure that he will cope well with this important role, as NATO continues to increase its support for Ukraine, – said Stoltenberg.

In turn, Turner said that he is looking forward to the time when he will lead the NATO mission in Ukraine and will work very closely with the Ukrainian authorities to help ensure the country’s support from NATO.

At the NATO summit in Washington, the Allies agreed to create a NATO Security Assistance and Training Group for Ukraine (NSATU) to better coordinate the provision of military equipment and training for Ukraine.

Allies also announced their readiness to provide Ukraine with long-term security assistance with a minimum base amount of 40 billion euros over the next year.
