Zelenskiy: Start of membership talks with the EU is Ukraine’s top priority

Ukraine’s top priority is to be ready for a political decision to start negotiations on EU membership this year.
This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his speech on October 24 via video link to the European Commission Board.
– “I hope that it will be the same for the European Union. We have laid a solid foundation for this,” he said, addressing the European Commissioners from 27 EU countries.
The Head of State emphasized that Ukraine had moved as quickly as possible to implement the seven recommendations of the European Commission, having done even more than could be expected from a state that had suffered a full-scale aggression.
– However, Ukraine is not asking for political discounts, but demonstrates the necessary political pace, because we share the approach that decisions should be based on individual achievements of countries that aspire to become members of the European Union,” the President added.
On October 17, the Verkhovna Rada passed in the second reading a bill to strengthen financial monitoring of PEPs (Politically Exposed Persons), fulfilling the last condition for the start of Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations.
