Newly appointed National Security and Defence Council Secretary Oleksandr Lytvynenko The Russian elite may one day turn its back on dictator Vladimir Putin. This development is quite realistic.

This was stated by the new Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, in an interview with The Economist.

– “There are still quite a few rational people in the country’s leadership. They will start thinking and acting when they realise that the price of staying with Putin is higher than leaving him,” he said.

At the same time, Lytvynenko said that Ukraine’s top priority is to obtain real security guarantees.

According to him, ideally, this means NATO membership or a comprehensive security agreement with the United States, similar to those it has with the Philippines, Japan or South Korea.

He noted that this will not be easy to achieve in times of war, but that bilateral security agreements with Britain, France, Italy, Canada and other countries can be seen as stepping stones to this goal.

– For the past 300 years, Russia has been a constant security challenge for this part of the world. It would be fantastic if we could eliminate this threat for at least a few generations,” said the NSDC Secretary.

According to The Economist, not everyone knows Russia as well as Oleksandr Lytvynenko. The new National Security and Defence Council secretary spent five years in Moscow as a cadet at the elite KGB academy. As the head of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, he was involved in undermining and obtaining information from his former colleagues during the two years of the war.

In late March, Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Oleksandr Lytvynenko to the post of Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council by decree. said that Russian elites may one day turn against dictator Vladimir Putin.
