On November 29, Ukraine received LRU multiple launch rocket systems from France. This was announced by Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov.
The French multiple launch rocket system LRU is a modernized version of the American M270 MLRS. There is also a German version of MARS II (Mittleres Artillerieraketensystem) and Italian – MLRS-I (MLRS Improved).
These MLRS use a tracked chassis with high cross-country ability. It carries a launcher for two unified containers with missiles, as well as high-tech electric guidance drives.
The fire control devices operate on the new EFCS (European Fire Control System) of Airbus, which allows the use of GMLRS family rockets.
The LRU weapon system has a high level of accuracy, which allows to limit the number of ammunition, as well as allows gradation of effects through several modes of its warhead triggering.
LRU characteristics:
- Main weapon type: M31 missile;
- Range: depending on the modification, the LRU has a range of at least 80-85 km;
- Payload: 12 missiles;
- Crew: three people (launcher manager, operator, driver);
- Weight: 27.1 tons;
- Has a diesel engine, with a capacity of 500 hp;
- Speed: 70 km/h.
The satellite navigation and control system guarantees high hit accuracy. It should be noted that all M31 variants have a unified high-explosive warhead weighing 91 kg.
