There were three hits to the protective shell of the reactor at the Zaporizhzhia NPP – IAEA

On the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant temporarily occupied by Russian troops, there were at least three direct hits to the main structures of the reactor’s protective shell.
This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
The situation at Zaporizhzhia NPP
– Today, for the first time since November 2022 and after I laid out the five main principles of avoiding a serious nuclear accident with radiological consequences, ISAMZ confirmed that there were at least three direct hits to the main protective shell structures of the ZNPP reactor. This should not happen, – says the Director General of the IAEA.
Rafael Grossi noted that no one can gain military or political benefit from attacks on nuclear facilities.
The Director General of the IAEA called on military decision-makers to refrain from any actions that violate the basic principles of protecting nuclear facilities. However, he did not specify to whom exactly this appeal was addressed.
At the same time, the International Atomic Energy Agency said that IAEA experts confirmed the physical impact of drone attacks on the Zaporizhzhia NPP on April 7, in particular on one of the plant’s six reactors.
– One casualty is reported. Damage to the sixth power unit did not endanger nuclear safety. But this is a serious incident that can lead to a violation of the integrity of the reactor’s protective shell system, -the IAEA claims.
Detonation of a drone at the ZNPP
On the afternoon of April 7, the International Atomic Energy Agency announced the detonation of a drone on the territory of the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP. The Russian side accused Ukraine of the incident.
However, the representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense, Andriy Yusov, claims that Ukraine is not involved in any armed provocations at the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP, and simulated Russian strikes on the territory of the station are a constant practice of the occupiers.
