On Sunday, October 30, it became known that Bayraktar drones are to be armed with air-to-air missiles to combat kamikaze drones.

Turkish companies Roketsan and Baykar have already signed a contract to integrate the missile from the Sungur short-range complex.

The Turkish Sungur man-portable air defense system was first unveiled in July 2020 on the platform of the Vuran armored vehicle after successful tests.

The complex can detect, identify and track targets both by day and night. It is based on a missile from the Turkish PorSav (Portatif Savunma) portable anti-aircraft missile system.

It is almost analogous to the Stinger MANPAD missile, but there is one difference: the Turkish PorSav uses its homemade Imager Infrared (IIR) seeker head instead of the Stinger’s IR Seeker Head.

The missile is designed to engage low-altitude air targets. It can be launched from a mobile platform with 360-degree rotation capability.

The maximum range of the man-portable air defense missile is 8 km, and its altitude is 4 km.

The missile head uses Imagine Infra-Red (IIR) thermal (infrared) homing system, so it has a high target acquisition rate.

Integrating these missiles into Akıncı and Bayraktar TB2 combat drones could lead to a low-cost aerial patrol to eliminate threats such as attack helicopters and enemy drones, including kamikaze drones.
