The German Bundestag recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

The relevant resolution was adopted by a majority of votes, without counting, by a show of hands. The Left and Alternative for Germany abstained from voting.

The resolution document was prepared in the government coalition: the Social Democratic Party, the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party, as well as the largest opposition faction, the CDU/CSU.

Watching now

— All of Ukraine suffered from famine and repression, not only its grain-producing regions. From today’s point of view, the historical-political classification as genocide is obvious. The German Bundestag shares this classification, – the document says.

It emphasizes that forced starvation was also aimed at “political suppression of Ukrainian national consciousness.” Mass deaths from hunger were not the result of crop failure, but were the responsibility of the political leadership of the USSR led by dictator Stalin.

-Thus, the Holodomor is a crime against humanity, – the parliamentarians declare.

During the voting in the Bundestag, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Oleksiі Makeev and Deputy Head of the Foreign Ministry Andrij Melnyk, who previously held the position of Ambassador to Germany, were present.

In November, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, in an author’s article for the German publication Welt, called on Berlin to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of Ukrainians and to reject the Kremlin’s lies.
