The European Parliament supported the resolution on the creation of a special tribunal to investigate Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine. The top leadership of the country is responsible for such crimes.

This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyу.

He called on all partners of Ukraine to support the tribunal.

– I welcome the adoption of the resolution by the European Parliament on the creation of a special tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine. I call on all our partners to support such a tribunal. Russia must be held accountable for its aggressive war, justice must prevail, – Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed.

The decision was adopted by 472 votes, 19 spoke against, 33 parliamentarians abstained.

In the resolution, the members of the European Parliament demand that the political and military leadership of Russia and Belarus be brought to justice.

The atrocities committed by Russian forces in Buchа, Irpіn and many other Ukrainian cities testify to the brutality of war and emphasize the importance of coordinated international action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The work to create the terms of the tribunal is still to come, but MEPs stress that it should have jurisdiction to investigate the actions of not only Vladimir Putin and Russia’s political and military leadership, but also self-proclaimed president Alexander Lukashenko and his henchmen in Belarus.

The EU’s preparatory work on the creation of a special tribunal should start immediately.

At the end of November 2022, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly recognized Russia as a terrorist state. And also called for the creation of a special international tribunal.
