About 500 civilians were evacuated: Yermak confirmed the evacuation from Mariupol and Azovstal

The next stage of a complex operation to evacuate people from Mariupol and Azovstal took place. It became possible to take out about 500 civilians.

This was announced by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak. He thanked the UN for the help and assured that Ukraine would continue to do everything to save all civilians and the military.

The situation at the Azovstal plant is complicated, fierce battles continue there. On May 5, the Azov Regiment published a video of the battles on its page. As noted by the Ukrainian defenders, they hold the defense of the plant under heavy fire. At the same time, the enemy uses aviation, artillery and infantry.

Hundreds of Mariupol civilians lived in the dungeons of the Azovstal plant for more than two months. They ended up there at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression, when the occupiers staged a blockade of the city.

It became possible to get them out of there at the cost of considerable efforts by officials, the UN and the Red Cross. The first humanitarian convoy of 156 exhausted citizens reached Zaporizhzhya on May 3.
