EU sanctions against Russia are not enough to end the war – the Prime Minister of Poland

Санкції ЄС проти Росії недостатні для закінчення війни

The Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki said that the adoption of tough EU sanctions against Russia was the right way, but it was not enough to end the war.

– The ban on cooperation with the Russian energy sector will be useless if Europe continues to buy raw materials from Russia,” Morawiecki said.

He stressed that, according to some estimates, since the beginning of the war, EU countries have transferred more than € 20 billion to Moscow to import energy resources, but this money feeds Putin’s war machine.

Morawiecki noted that the decision to disconnect Russia from the SWIFT system was flawed, as it only applies to individual banks and not to other Russian financial institutions or alternative payment systems such as SPFS (System for Transfer of Financial Messages).

– It cannot be that instead of severely punishing the Russian aggressor, we threatened him with a finger, and that is what some European leaders are satisfied with. This position proves the weakness of the EU and the weakness of Europe as a whole, the weakness of the West,” the prime minister said.

He assessed that the current sanctions are ineffective and insufficient. They should concern the Russian authorities, Russian elites, Russian producers and carriers, as well as Russian society.

– In short, all of Russia must pay for its crimes in Ukraine, for killing women and children. If we really want to stop the war, the sanctions must be tougher. We must stop buying Russian resources and confiscate the property of the Russian Federation, oligarchs and their representatives,” he said.

Morawiecki reminded of Poland’s plan to “de-Russify the economy,” according to which Poland will completely abandon Russian oil by the end of 2022, and Russian coal by the end of spring.

According to Morawiecki, this plan of rejection of Russian oil and gas is the most radical in Europe.
