The United Nations has launched a practical initiative to convene the General Assembly automatically whenever the Security Council vetoes it. This resolution was supported by almost 40 countries, including Ukraine.

This was announced by the representative of Ukraine to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya.

– Under the draft resolution, which could be approved in April, the General Assembly will convene automatically each time the Security Council vetoes, within 10 days to debate the veto situation, in which the veto is applied, except when the issue is considered at the Extraordinary Special Session of the UN General Assembly, – he said.

Kislytsia claims that such a decision is aimed at enhancing the role of the UN General Assembly, strengthening multilateralism and ensuring a mechanism of accountability between UN bodies in accordance with the Charter of the Organization.

He added that in recent years, the use of vetoes with far-reaching consequences for the work of the UN has increased significantly. At the same time, the Soviet Union first used its veto power in the UN Security Council in 1957.

The diplomat also noted that the resolution was supported by the United States, which itself has the right to veto. The draft resolution is expected to be approved in April.
