The Armed Forces of Ukraine shot down the Russian frigate Admiral Makarov

The Armed Forces of Ukraine shot down the Russian ship Admiral Makarov with Ukrainian Neptune missiles. Deputy Honcharenko announced this in his telegram channel.
According to the Odesa publication Dumskaya, a Russian ship of 11356R project of the Burevestnik type is on fire near the Zmiinyi Island. The aggressor aircraft is now circling over this area. Rescue ships from the temporarily occupied Crimea have come to the rescue.
What caused the fire situation on one of the three frigates of the Russian Black Sea Fleet is not clear. But, according to preliminary information, the ship was hit by the Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missile.
Information about the explosion on the frigate appeared in social networks on the evening of May 5.
The frigate Admiral Makarov is a multi-purpose missile ship of the far sea zone, which was in service with the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The ceremonial launching took place on September 2, 2015 in Kaliningrad.
In the light of recent events, the name of the frigate in honor of Admiral Makarov seems very symbolic. The same Vice Admiral Stepan Osipovich Makarov, who was both the inventor of mine transport, the developer of the theory of unsinkability, and the pioneer of the use of icebreakers.
He even developed the Russian semaphore alphabet. But in 1904 he died during the Russian-Japanese War. Like his namesake frigate – during the Russian-Ukrainian war, almost 120 years later.
How “cool and invincible” the frigate Admiral Makarov was, his commander, captain of the second rank Grigoriy Breev, told in his time. He called his story “A frigate with the capabilities of a cruiser…”.
According to Breev, such ships never stay still for long. Because:
- the range of onboard weapons is greater than that of ships of previous generations, and the combat capabilities are wider;
- it surpasses large surface ships of NATO countries in the Black Sea region in many aspects;
- can strike ships and coastal targets, search for submarines using a helicopter and on-board equipment, monitor them and attack with torpedoes.
As the captain said, the main strike weapons of the ship were universal launchers for eight Caliber and Onyx cruise missiles. The former are capable of hitting sea targets at a distance of 400 km, and land targets at a distance of 2,000 km.
Supersonic Onyxes deliver a 300-kilogram warhead to the target and it is almost impossible to intercept a missile flying at a speed of Mach 2.6.
As for the air defense of the frigate, it is organized into several echelons. At distant approaches, the threat is neutralized by anti-aircraft missiles of the Shtil-M complex, near targets are shot down by AK-630M six-barreled automatic guns.
A 100-millimeter AK-190 gun with a firing range of up to 21 km is installed on the forecastle. To combat submarines, the ship is equipped with a 12-barreled missile launcher and four torpedo tubes capable of firing the latest generation of precision-guided munitions.
The total capacity of the power facility is 56 thousand hp. This is enough to accelerate a ship with a displacement of four thousand tons to 55 km/h and provide a cruising range of more than 9 thousand km. By the way, during its service, Admiral Makarov has already traveled almost 190 thousand km.
– The sailors of the new frigate are highly coordinated in solving problems. This means that they will demonstrate the St. Andrew’s flag with dignity, – the deputy commander of the formation, First Rank Captain Serhiy Radauskas proudly noted.
… We only have to add one thing: yes, the ship was really good. But all its virtues did not help it to avoid the Ukrainian Neptune and follow the Moscow cruiser. That is, the key word in this “glorious” story of the frigate Admiral Makarov is the word “was”.
