Winter weather will not bring a lull in the war – ISW

The Institute for the Study of War, ISW, does not believe that the fighting in Ukraine will stop or come to a standstill because of the winter weather, despite the assumptions of the West.
ISW analysts commented on NBC News’ report that some representatives of the US Defense Department and the West see “the expected winter slowdown in hostilities as an opportunity to open diplomatic relations between Russia and Ukraine.”
Some military equipment may need adaptation to colder weather, and a lack of equipment or ammunition may slow the advance due to logistical difficulties rather than winter weather. Winter weather can cause significant damage to ill-equipped Russian forces in Ukraine, but well-equipped Ukrainian forces are unlikely to halt their counterattacks due to the onset of winter weather and may be able to take advantage of the frozen terrain to move more easily than they could in wet autumn weather. .
Experts believe that if hostilities stop this winter, it will be due to logistical problems and the culmination of several campaigns on both sides. Russian campaigns to capture all of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions ended several months ago, and Russian troops are firmly on the defensive along most of the front line.
