Payment of reparations to Ukraine for the Russian war: the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution
On Monday, November 14, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on creating a register of damages caused to Ukraine as a result of the war started by the Russian Federation.
94 countries voted in favor, 14 against. Another 73 representatives abstained.
Among those who voted against, you can see such countries as Russia, Belarus, Syria, Iran, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Eritrea, China.
The resolution states that Russia should be held accountable for violations of international law in and against Ukraine, including its aggression in violation of the UN Charter, as well as any violations of international humanitarian law.
The occupying country must bear the legal consequences of all its internationally wrongful acts, along with reparations.
The UN states, in turn, recognize the need to create, in cooperation with Ukraine, an international mechanism for compensation for damages, losses or harm that is a consequence of the internationally illegal acts of the Russian Federation in Ukraine or against Ukraine.
In general, the adopted resolution recommends the creation by UN members in cooperation with Ukraine of “an international registry of damages to register evidence caused to all interested individuals and legal entities, as well as to the state of Ukraine as a result of Russia’s international illegal actions in Ukraine.”
Ukraine prepared the draft of this resolution with the co-authorship of almost fifty countries.
Earlier, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, said that this document contains a call to member states to unite in order to create a legitimate international infrastructure to overcome the consequences of Russian aggression against Ukraine and record evidence of atrocities.
And also – “preserving hope for justice for millions whose lives have been forever changed by the imperial ambitions of a small ruler of a large country.”
