Ukrainians called joining NATO the best guarantee of national security – survey

The Democratic Initiatives Fund and the sociological service of the Razumkov Center conducted a survey, the results of which revealed that the majority of Ukrainian citizens consider the country’s accession to NATO the best option for guaranteeing national security after Russian aggression.
Thus, 48.9% of respondents believe that membership in the Alliance will guarantee Ukraine’s security in the future. Another 16.7% believe that it is necessary to develop one’s own Armed Forces and defense industry following the example of Israel or Switzerland.
About 10% of Ukrainians called the best option an agreement on strategic defense cooperation with several allies – for example, with Poland and the Baltic states without the USA.
Another 8.5% of respondents supported a non-aligned or neutral status with international security guarantees for Ukraine.
At the same time, 6.7% of respondents are in favor of an agreement on strategic defense cooperation with the USA.
About 10% are undecided.
Meanwhile, the opinions of Ukrainians regarding the possible terms of joining NATO were divided:
- 25.3% believe that it is possible after victory and carrying out the necessary reforms;
- 24.9% – that the entry can happen immediately after the victory;
- 18.8% – that joining NATO is realistic even before the victory in the war;
- 16.2% of respondents consider such a scenario unlikely even after the victory and implementation of reforms;
- almost 15% of respondents were undecided.
Earlier, the Secretary General of NATO called the first task of the Alliance countries to help Ukraine in the war with Russia, after which it will be possible to talk about full membership.
