Currently, the priority is victory in the war, not Ukraine’s membership in NATO – Stoltenberg

NATO’s position regarding Ukraine has not changed, now the main priority is not membership in the union, but helping Kyiv to win a large-scale war with Moscow. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made such a statement at a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday, February 15.
– As for Ukraine, NATO’s position has not changed. We have said more than once that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance, but now we are focused on ensuring Ukraine’s victory in the war. Because the only way for Ukraine’s integration and further movement towards closer Euro-Atlantic cooperation is to ensure that Ukraine prevails as a sovereign state, – Stoltenberg said.
He added that the Allies are currently focused on ensuring that Ukraine receives the weapons and ammunition necessary to oust the Russian invaders.
– We are also working on a longer-term partnership to help Ukraine transition from Soviet doctrines and weapons to NATO standards, improve interoperability, and carry out security and defense reform. And this will bring Ukraine closer to the Alliance, – said the Secretary General.
On September 30, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyу announced that Ukraine had signed an application for accelerated accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed hope that during the NATO summit in July in Vilnius, new formulations will be found regarding Ukraine’s membership.
