It is important to take steps that will bring Ukraine closer to NATO: Nausėda on the Vilnius summit

During the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, it is important to take steps that will bring Ukraine closer to the Alliance.
This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda in an interview with El Pais.
He noted that the parties will raise a number of important issues at the NATO summit. In particular, the implementation of the agreements reached last year in Madrid on Operation Enhanced Forward Presence in the Baltic States.
According to Nauseda, the operation is important because it will serve as a deterrent to Russia’s imperialist ambitions.
Commitments to defence spending are also on the agenda. The President of Lithuania noted that the 2% of GDP spending figure should be seen as a lower, not an upper limit.
– “If we want to increase the production capacity of the defence industry and continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, as we have done so far, military spending should be increased,” he said.
Nausėda stressed that steps should be taken at the Vilnius summit to bring Ukraine closer to NATO.
– “This does not mean that decisions will be made on future membership, but it does mean that steps should be taken that will give a clear signal to Kyiv that we will make the necessary efforts to bring them as close to NATO as possible,” he added.
