Because of the threat of Russian subversion: Energoatom insures all Ukrainian NPPs

In June, National Energy and Utilities Company Energoatom signed an insurance contract for more than UAH 5 billion against damage caused by a nuclear incident at all four nuclear power plants in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of National Energy and Utilities Company.
Thus, in the event that Russia blows up the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP, Ukraine will be able to receive insurance compensation.
– The agreement, in particular, states that insurance coverage for Zaporizhzhya NPP is provided with a deferred condition after the plant is liberated from the occupiers, as it is currently not controlled by Ukraine and the only legitimate operator, Energoatom, the statement said.
The company said that similar exclusions for military causes of nuclear incidents were in place in previous Energoatom insurance agreements and are standard international practice.
As for the rest of the NPPs operating in the territory controlled by Ukraine, insurance for nuclear damage that may be caused by a nuclear incident is in full force and effect.
Energoatom stressed that it complies with all the requirements of national and international legislation on civil liability insurance for nuclear damage and does everything possible to prevent the occurrence of an insured event in the context of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine and the seizure of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhya NPP, by a terrorist country.
