Ukraine has already received cluster munitions from the USA – Tarnavskyi
Ukraine has already received cluster munitions from the United States, but has not yet used them in the war against the Russian invaders.
This was stated by the commander of the Tavria operational-strategic group of troops Oleksandr Tarnavskyi in an interview with CNN.
– We received them (cluster munitions, – Ed.), we haven’t used them yet, but they can fundamentally change (the situation on the battlefield, – Ed.), – he said.
According to the commander, the Russians understand that after receiving these ammunitions, Ukraine will have an advantage.
– The enemy will give up that part of the area where it is possible to use it, – said Tarnavskyi.
According to him, the decision on which areas cluster shells can be used will be made by the top management.
He also emphasized that their use is prohibited in densely populated areas, even if they are occupied by Russian troops.
– The Russians think that we will use them on all areas of the front. This is very wrong. But they are very worried, – he added.
US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin said in an interview with CNN that the Ukrainian military promised to use the cluster munitions handed over by the Americans where they would pose a minimal risk to the civilian population.
According to the head of the Pentagon, the Ukrainian army promises to use cluster munitions “in appropriate places” outside populated areas.
– They will record where they have been used and prioritize demining. And we will help them in this – in those places where they will create conditions for us – Austin added.
On July 7, the United States announced the allocation of a new aid package to Ukraine in the amount of about $800 million , which will contain 155 mm cluster shells.
