On January 23, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) General Manager Stacey Cummings signed contracts for the purchase of about 220,000 155 mm artillery shells worth $1.2 billion.

This is reported on the NATO website.

– We just signed a contract worth $1.2 billion for the purchase of hundreds of thousands of 155 mm artillery ammunition. This demonstrates that NATO’s proven framework (NSPA) for joint procurement is working. Russia’s war in Ukraine has turned into a battle of ammunition. Therefore, it is important that the allies replenish their stocks, as we continue to support Ukraine, – Stoltenberg said.

He noted that the Allies have already increased the production of ammunition, doing it partly to replenish their stocks, and partly to ensure the continuation of supplies to Ukraine.

Watching now

– This is a continuous process, almost daily, at least weekly: the allies supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. Increasing production in the future, of course, will allow us to continue to do this, and that is why these contracts are so important, – added the Secretary General.

According to Reuters , about 220,000 artillery munitions are likely to be purchased, and the first deliveries are expected at the end of 2025.

Ammunition will be supplied by the French company Nexter and the German Junghans, the source of the publication said.

Weapons for Ukraine

We previously reported that France, as part of the artillery coalition, will produce 78 Caesar self-propelled artillery units for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Caesar self-propelled gun is the “flagship of French artillery”. It has a caliber of 155 mm and is capable of firing at a distance of up to 42 km, firing about six shots per minute.
