Some fighters from Mariupol, who are currently in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region, managed to contact members of their families. For example, the Separate Special Forces Regiment Azov commander, Denys Prokopenko, called his wife, Kateryna.

The Ukrainian defender assured her that everything was fine with him, foreign media reported. Kateryna Prokopenko said that now the fighters are in satisfactory condition. This issue is monitored by a third party represented by the UN and the Red Cross.

– He said that he was fine and asked how I was. I have heard from other sources that the conditions are more or less satisfactory. They are fed and given to drink. Conditions meet the requirements. During this short period, they were not subjected to violence. We do not know what will happen next. But now there are third parties (the UN and the Red Cross) controlling the situation, – said Prokopenko’s wife.

She noted that it was unclear whether her husband could speak freely and without the presence of others during the call.

Watching now

At least 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, including members of the Azov Regiment, entered Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territory last week. The International Committee of the Red Cross, which monitors the conditions of military detention, did not make any statement.

Most of the wounded Azov fighters are being held in the village of Olenivka in Russian-occupied Donetsk. Still, a smaller group of severely wounded defenders are in hospital in the occupied city of Novoazovsk. Prokopenko said that none of the fighters was taken to Russia as far as she knew.
