Russia spreads fake that Ukraine is required not to glorify Bandera in order to join the EU

Russian propagandists are dispelling the narrative that the European Union has allegedly demanded that Ukraine join.
The Center for Combating Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council reports that dozens of Kremlin media are spreading fakes that “Ukraine is being demanded to stop glorifying Stepan Bandera for the sake of EU membership.”
It is noted that to prove this pseudo-information, they cite the thesis of Arno Klarsfeld, a lawyer for the Association of Sons and Daughters of Jews Deported from France, about the need to rename Ukrainian streets named after Stepan Bandera, broadcast on French BFM TV.
The JRS at the National Security and Defense Council notes that at one time this figure stated that Russia and Ukraine should find a compromise on Donbass.
The Center for Counteracting Disinformation reminded that the main requirements for Ukraine’s accession to the EU remain reforms and compliance of Ukrainian legislation with European ones.
The position of an individual does not reflect the mood of society, the center stressed. Russia cites loyal “experts” to create a false impression of a split among the population of Western countries in support of Ukraine.
On June 17, the European Commission recommended that Ukraine be granted EU candidate status. The European Commission said that Ukraine had generally made progress in achieving the stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities.
A formal status decision for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia is due to be made at a summit of EU leaders on June 23.
