Scholz called on allies who can supply Ukraine with tanks to do so immediately
Allied countries that can supply battle tanks to Ukraine should do so immediately. In this matter, you need to act quickly.
This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a speech at the Munich Security Conference.
-Those who can send such battle tanks really should do so now, – Scholz stressed, assuring that he would “campaign intensively” for the Allies to move forward with deliveries.
According to him, Germany is ready to help by providing logistics and replenishing ammunition, as well as training the Ukrainian military.
– Germany will do everything in its power to make these decisions (regarding tanks, – Ed.) easier for partners. For example, training Ukrainian soldiers to drive tanks or providing support in terms of supplies and logistics… I consider this an example of the kind of leadership that everyone has the right to expect from Germany, and I directly offer it to our friends and partners, – added Scholz.
At the same time, the Chancellor of Germany expressed the opinion that there should be a balance “between providing the best possible support to Ukraine and avoiding unintentional escalation.”
– I believe that we will do well if we carefully weigh all the consequences of our actions and carefully coordinate all the key steps between the allies… Caution should take priority over hasty decisions, – said Scholz.
As you know, after long hesitation, Germany did allow other countries to re-export Leopard 2 battle tanks as part of aid to Ukraine. Berlin also decided to supply one company of these tanks for the Armed Forces.
So far, Poland, Norway, Canada and Spain have completed a battalion of Leopard 2A4 tanks for Ukraine. Finland also joined the coalition.
According to forecasts of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, at the first stage, the Ukrainian army could receive from Western allies from 120 to 140 battle tanks.
