Deployed against NATO: ISW explained why air defense does not cover the Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation
A Russian insider source said on January 21 that Russian air defenses in the Leningrad region are weak. Probably, it cannot protect against blows from the south.
This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It is noted that air defense in this area probably cannot protect against strikes from the south.
– Russian air defense systems in the Leningrad Region are most likely located to protect against strikes from the northwest and west, as Russia has historically deployed its air defense systems in this region to protect against hypothetical NATO attacks, – the Institute notes.
The Russian military is currently reforming the Leningrad Military District (LMD) in preparation for a potential war against NATO and may be deploying military facilities along the border with the Allies.
Ukrainian strikes could force Russian forces to redeploy short-range air defense systems along expected UAV flight paths to protect potential targets of strategic value.
– Russian forces using short-range systems such as the Panzer may not be able to cover all important potential targets in the Leningrad region without dropping additional systems into the area, and continued Ukrainian strikes deep into Russia’s rear could increase pressure on Russian air defenses in general.
On the night of Sunday, January 21, as a result of a drone attack, the terminal of the Novatek company caught fire in the Ust-Luga port of the Leningrad region of the Russian Federation . After the shelling, the terminal stopped working.
Before the fire, eyewitnesses heard at least two explosions. About 150 people were evacuated from the enterprise.
Later it became known that this was a special operation of the Security Service of Ukraine.
