Ukraine outwitted the Russian Federation by talking about a counteroffensive in the Kherson region, but this is not the end – ISW

Ukrainian troops inflicted a major operational defeat on Russia, recapturing almost the entire Kharkiv region in a swift counteroffensive.
Ukraine’s success was the result of skillful planning and execution of the campaign, which included efforts to maximize the use of Western weapons systems such as HIMARS.
This is stated in the report of analysts of the ISW Institute for the Study of War.
A long discussion by Kyiv, and then the announcement of a counteroffensive operation aimed at the Kherson region, diverted the attention of significant forces of Russian troops from the areas where Ukrainian forces have delivered decisive blows over the past few days. The armed forces of Ukraine used HIMARS and other Western systems to attack Russian land lines of communication in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions, creating the conditions for the success of this operation.
Ukrainian leaders demonstratively discussed strikes in the south, which successfully confused the Russians about their intentions in the Kharkiv region. Western weapon systems were necessary but not sufficient to ensure Ukraine’s success. The Ukrainian application of these systems in a well-planned and well-conducted campaign ensured significant success of counteroffensive operations in the Kharkiv region.
However, there is no reason to believe that the counteroffensive announced in the Kherson region is exclusively the tricks of the Ukrainian side. It is reported that Ukrainian forces attacked and succeeded in several important points on the west bank of the Dniprо. They have cut off the way at two bridges across the river, and are also preventing Russian forces from setting up supplies via barges and crossings. Ukraine has deployed significant combat power and concentrated much of the long-range Western precision systems it has in this direction, and it is unlikely that it did so solely to draw Russian forces into the area.
