The situation is too fragile – IAEA on explosions near ZNPP

The mine explosion, which damaged the power supply line of one of the reactors of Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, demonstrates how precarious the nuclear safety situation is at the facility.
This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi with reference to the data of the International Atomic Energy Agency experts who are currently at ZNPP.
According to him, the external 750 kV power line between the switchgear of the plant and the main electrical transformer of reactor unit No. 4 was disconnected due to the explosion that occurred outside the perimeter of the ZNPP fence in the evening of October 30.
Now the fourth power unit receives the electricity necessary for cooling and other important nuclear safety functions from the backup line connecting ZNPP with the distribution point of the neighboring thermal power plant.
Another proof of the unstable situation in the area of ZNPP is the de-energization for several hours of one of the three backup power lines of ZNPP, which feeds the city of Energodar.
– The staff of Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant are working hard in extremely difficult conditions to prevent another blackout.
And although their dedicated efforts have some positive results, the situation with electricity at the plant remains extremely vulnerable,” said Rafael Mariano Grossi.
Currently, the fifth power unit is in a state of hot shutdown to produce steam necessary for the operation of the plant, the sixth is heated for the same purpose.
The other four units remain in cold shutdown mode.
