The Ministry of Defense of Russia probably responded to the call of propagandists to systematically attack the electrical infrastructure supporting Ukrainian nuclear power plants by setting the conditions for an emergency shutdown of these nuclear power plants.

This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Thus, on February 19, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation stated that Ukrainian officials were allegedly planning attacks on radiologically dangerous facilities in Ukraine in order to accuse the Russians of indiscriminate strikes on these facilities and of violating the Convention on Nuclear Safety before the 11th extraordinary special session of the UN General Assembly on February 22.

Watching now

– The Ministry of Defense of Russia may start an information operation aimed at creating informational conditions for carrying out such strikes and possible radiological incidents that may arise as a result of systematic de-energization of facilities, – analysts note.

According to ISW, the attacks called for by Russian propagandists are unlikely to result in radiological incidents, but strikes near nuclear power plants always carry some risk.

– At the same time, previous Russian attacks on critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine do not indicate that Russian forces are systematically attacking electrical infrastructure related to nuclear power plants, – experts add.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that the Russian Federation blocks the rotation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts to the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
