The US will announce a $2 billion aid package to Ukraine on February 24.

This is reported by CNN with reference to an American official.

The White House is expected to announce an additional $2 billion in the Ukraine Security Initiative on Friday, February 24, the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion.

Unlike reduction aid packages, which are taken directly from the US arms stockpile and can be quickly shipped to Ukraine, USAI (Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative) packages are purchased or ordered from industry.

As part of such deliveries, aid could take significantly longer to reach Ukraine, although it also signals a long-term commitment to helping Kiev in what the US sees as a protracted conflict against Russia.

CNN notes that the new procurement funding and new contracts for the supply of equipment for Ukraine are in question, including:

  • HIMARS missiles;
  • artillery ammunition caliber 155 m;
  • numerous types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs);
  • equipment for combating UAVs;
  • demining equipment;
  • secure communication equipment;
  • financing training and maintenance.

Just three days ago, the US announced the 32nd reduction in US equipment for Ukraine, worth $450 million, which covers additional munitions for HIMARS and howitzers, Javelin anti-tank missiles and air surveillance radars.

The announcement was made on the same day that US President Joe Biden made a top-secret visit to Kyiv, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Biden said he confirmed his support for Ukraine in conversations with Polish President Andrzej Duda.
