In January, the authorities were close to announcing the evacuation – Klitschko

In January, the Kyiv authorities were ready to announce the evacuation of the city’s residents due to strikes by Russian troops on critical infrastructure.
Kyiv leader Vitaliy Klitschko said this in an interview with the German publication Redaktions Netzwerk Deutschland.
– In January, we were close to calling on the population to evacuate. The worst blackout lasted 14 hours. There was no electricity, water, heating. Fortunately, the weather was mild. But the situation was very difficult, – he said.
According to him, the capital’s critical infrastructure survived thanks to “great efforts” and the fact that energy and utility workers “worked around the clock.”
Klitschko also noted the Iris-T air defense system handed over by Germany, which helped infrastructure objects to withstand and “saved thousands of lives” during the Russian strikes on Kyiv.
Since October 2022, the Russians have begun to launch massive missile strikes on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine. The occupiers set themselves the goal of leaving Ukrainians without electricity, water and heat in winter.
Due to damaged equipment, electricity supply restriction schedules have been applied in Ukraine.
In March 2023, Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced that Ukraine had won the battle with the Russian Federation on the energy front, having maintained the power system throughout the winter in the face of massive attacks on infrastructure facilities.
