Rafael Grossi, Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that his proposal to conclude an agreement to protect the Zaporizhzhia NPP is still relevant.

He is currently adjusting his proposals to achieve a breakthrough in this matter. Grossi insists on creating a safety zone at the plant to prevent a possible nuclear disaster.

– We are making some adjustments to the proposals that we put forward for discussion. I am sure that it would be possible to establish some form of protection, perhaps focusing not so much on the idea of the zone as on the protection itself: what people should or should not do to protect the plant,” Grossi said in an interview with Reuters.

The latest proposal of the IAEA chief no longer envisages the creation of a demilitarization zone around the ZNPP. At the same time, Ukraine does not want an agreement that actually recognizes or allows a Russian military presence at the plant.

Other elements of Grossi’s plan include a ceasefire on and from the plant, as well as the withdrawal of heavy weapons.

– I am in no way giving up. I think, on the contrary, we need to multiply our efforts, we need to continue,” said Grossi, adding that military activity in the region has intensified.

As a reminder, Rafael Grossi arrived at Zaporizhzhia NPP today. This is the second visit of the IAEA Director General to the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and Europe since it was occupied by Russian invaders.

Grossi said that the situation at ZNPP has not improved, and the fighting around the plant is only intensifying.
