Macron: NATO should “give a form” to Ukraine’s accession prospects

French President Emmanuel Macron has backed calls to put Ukraine on a “concrete path” to NATO membership after the war.
– We have to define a path to give shape to the prospect of Ukraine’s accession to NATO, which we opened in 2008 in Bucharest,” he said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Elysee Palace yesterday.
According to him, the decisions that will be taken at the summit in Vilnius will bind NATO for years to come.
– “I mean, first of all, support for Ukraine, for which we must make a long-term commitment,” Macron explained.
In the 2008 Bucharest Declaration, NATO members promised Ukraine and Georgia that they would one day join the military alliance. In September 2022, Ukraine applied for membership.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that discussing Ukraine’s membership in NATO is possible only after its victory in the war against Russia.
