Lithuanian Seimas calls for Ukraine to join NATO, otherwise – bad peace with Russia

The Lithuanian Seimas has adopted a resolution calling on NATO countries to admit Ukraine to the bloc at the summit in Washington in July 2024.
This was reported by LRT.
The resolution was supported by 122 members of the Seimas out of 141.
– Ukraine is a security provider, so its membership in NATO will strengthen the alliance, be much more effective and cost less than the current support for Ukraine’s self-defense. With Ukraine’s full support in practical ways, including political support for the military bloc, it would be right to invite Ukraine to join NATO,” the document says.
According to the chairman of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee, Žygimantas Pavilionis, the resolution was prepared not only by Lithuanian MPs, but also by those who signed the Act of Independence of Lithuania. He hopes that “what was not done in Vilnius will be achieved in Washington in 10 months.”
Pavilionis said that if Ukraine’s membership in NATO is not secured, there is a threat of a bad peace with Russia. This will also affect Lithuania’s security.
Ukraine’s thorny path to NATO
During the Vilnius Summit on July 11-12, 2023, NATO member states agreed on a three-part support package to bring Ukraine’s accession to the military-political alliance closer. At the same time, the leaders of the bloc refused to formally invite our country to join, as they did not feel the support of their own society.
Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna believes that just five words in the declaration about a clear prospect of Ukraine’s membership in NATO would have changed the course of the war.
The next NATO summit will be held on July 9-11, 2024 in Washington, DC.
