The Armed Forces recaptured 400 sq. km of the territory of Kharkiv region – ISW
Ukrainian defenders probably took advantage of the redeployment of Russian forces and conducted an effective counteroffensive northwest of Izyum. They conquered 400 square kilometers.
This was stated by analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
-Ukrainian forces probably used tactical surprise to advance at least 20 km into Russian-controlled territory in the east of Kharkiv region on September 7, recapturing approximately 400 square kilometers of territory, – they said.
The ongoing operations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kherson region forced the occupiers to focus on the south, which enabled Ukrainian forces to launch local but very effective counterattacks in the Izyum area.
ISW considers it unlikely that the counteroffensive and attempts to distract the Russian forces in the south of Ukraine are a deception to resume operations in the Kharkiv region. Thus, Ukrainian forces probably wisely took advantage of the redistribution of Russian troops, equipment and general operational concentration to launch localized counterattacks on critical points in the Kharkiv region.
Analysts also drew attention to the level of shock and frank discussion of Ukrainian successes by Russian bloggers. This testifies to the extent of the surprise achieved by the Armed Forces, which is likely to successfully demoralize the Russian forces.
