The UN initiates a mission to investigate the killing of Ukrainian prisoners in the occupied Olenivka, Donetsk region.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said this during a speech in Lviv.
– What happened in the Olenivka colony is unacceptable. All prisoners of war are protected by international humanitarian law. The International Committee of the Red Cross must have access to them. At the request of the governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation, I decided to launch a fact-finding mission. Ukraine and the Russian Federation know about the terms and the team, – he said.
The mission will be headed by General Carlos dos Santos Cruz from Brazil. He was previously the commander of UN peacekeeping operations and has 40 years of experience in the field of national and international security.
– We will continue to work on obtaining the necessary guarantees to ensure access to the venue and other necessary locations. Simply put, our goal is to gather the facts. For this, the team must be able to obtain and analyze the necessary information. Above all, it means safe, reliable and unimpeded access to people, places and evidence without any interference from any party, – said the UN Secretary-General.
We will remind that on the night of July 29, Russian troops brutally killed dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war on the territory of the former penal colony in occupied Olenivka. The soldiers of the Azov regiment died, in particular.
Ukraine did not receive official lists of dead and wounded soldiers from the Russian Federation. The Prosecutor General’s Office was initially informed about 40 dead and 130 wounded. Subsequently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced more than 50 dead.
According to preliminary information from international experts, during the terrorist attack, the occupiers used thermobaric weapons. Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin informed about such data of the investigation.
Bellingcat informed that the enemy was preparing to kill Ukrainian soldiers in Olenivka and dug graves for their burial in advance.
